It had been fairly easy for Niall to persuade the two Lairds to agree to go hunting once he suggested that the three of them vie for the best single malt in the Highlands, which he would provide. He had bought it as a gift for Glenn Balfour but it was being used now in a better cause.

He had to make sure that his score stayed behind the others, though, so that they would win and he would stay in their favor. It was a bright but blustery day, and the few short hours of daylight were precious, so Niall had to make the most of them while thinking about how to use the situation to his best advantage. He needed to stretch out the time as best he could so that it would be absolutely dark by the time they got back and they would be unable to send out search parties on the treacherous terrain.

The two others proved to be abominable shots, no doubt due to their constant state of semi-inebriation, so Niall had to pretend to be a dreadful shot too. He missed one or two easy targets on purpose and was mercilessly teased for it, even though neither of the other two could have hit a barn door at ten paces.

Still, he could see the twilight deepening and knew that in a very short while it would be dark. Now he could loose a shot safely while there was just enough light to see by. He shot a single rabbit, to the irritation of the other two.

“Are you keeping the whisky for yourself, then?” Laurie’s voice was high with indignation.

Niall laughed. “It was a lucky shot,” he said dismissively. “We had a good contest. You two may share it between you.”

“Thank you, M’Laird, that is very sporting of you,” Callum smiled at him and they turned their horses’ heads for the castle. By the time they got there it was dark; they were all hungry and very tired.

Callum was called away as soon as he got in, and he left urgently with as much speed as he could muster. Niall did not take much notice. He took off his horse’s saddle while Laurie went in search of a drink. He turned around to find himself confronted by a large guard in full chainmail armor. He turned around to see another one behind him. He was a big man himself and he could have despatched one of them, but not two. They were standing so close to him that he could hear them breathing.

Callum McKinnon, sober for once, was striding towards him. “You little worm!” he growled. “I just heard from one of my guards that you were standing outside the dining room when Laurie and I were talking and minding our own business.
